A History Enthusiast Built a Replica-Document Business That Tops $1 Million and Appeared on ‘Shark Tank’

Ari Siegel turned a weekend pastime into a subscription service selling facsimiles of old letters and papers, and the company now brings in more than one million dollars a year after landing a national TV spot and retail partnerships.

Siegel, who runs History By Mail, says the idea began at home. As a child he listened to relatives recount wartime memories, and as an adult he started reproducing historical documents as gifts. What began as bespoke keepsakes for family and friends drew interest from a wider circle, and before long customers were asking how to get them regularly.

To meet demand, Siegel shifted the project into a monthly subscription and launched a storefront on Shopify. He later struck a deal with a national gift retailer, and an appearance on the TV program Shark Tank exposed the brand to a much larger audience. Those moves helped the business surpass the seven-figure mark in annual revenue, Siegel says, and built a steady stream of subscribers.

The company prints and packages replicas meant for education, collectors and curious consumers. Siegel emphasizes accuracy in design while keeping prices within reach, and he credits streamlined operations for handling increased orders without sacrificing quality. Customers, he says, often buy subscriptions to spark conversations at home or to add tangible context to history lessons.

A small-business adviser who reviewed the company’s model noted that tangible nostalgia and recurring billing are a strong combination. They suggested that turning a hobby into a predictable revenue stream depends on repeatable production and smart retail partnerships — exactly the path Siegel followed.

Looking ahead, Siegel plans to broaden the product range and explore museum and classroom collaborations to reach more buyers. He says the aim remains simple: to connect people with the past in an affordable, tactile way.
