In a rapidly evolving AI market, the battle for dominance among chatbots is intensifying. A report from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz reveals that Google's Gemini is swiftly catching up to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has long been a leader in the field. This report, now in its fifth edition, analyzes over two years of consumer interactions with AI products.

The report highlights 14 standout AI companies, showcasing a diverse application of AI technology. These companies, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others, are being used for a range of functions such as virtual assistance, creative editing, and productivity enhancement. Five other firms, including Claude and DeepAI, have maintained a consistent presence, reflecting their ongoing relevance in areas like companionship and image editing.

Google has notably increased its presence in the AI market, with Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs all securing spots on the top list. Gemini, in particular, is showing significant growth, ranking second on both mobile and web platforms. It has nearly half the mobile user base of ChatGPT, with a strong preference among Android users.

Meta AI and xAI's Grok are also making strides. Grok, which launched as a standalone app in late 2024, has rapidly gained traction, boasting over 20 million active users. Despite this progress, Meta’s assistant is facing challenges, notably due to privacy concerns that have affected its mobile adoption.

Meanwhile, some AI applications like DeepSeek are experiencing a decline, with mobile and web usage dropping significantly from their peak earlier this year. However, others like Perplexity and Claude continue to expand their user base.

Chinese companies are also emerging as key players in the market. AI products such as Quark, Doubao, and Kimi are gaining popularity, with a significant portion of their traffic originating from China. Many of these companies are extending their reach globally, contributing to a competitive international landscape.

New entrants Lovable and Replit have made their first appearance on the list, indicating a shift towards more innovative and diverse AI offerings. Andreessen Horowitz also highlights apps on the cusp of making the top list, reflecting a dynamic and rapidly growing industry where new players are constantly emerging. As app stores crack down on imitations, authentic and original AI applications are finding fertile ground to thrive.
