Apple pushed a small, behind‑the‑scenes security patch this week to close a vulnerability in its browser on iPhones, iPads and Mac computers, the company confirmed in an advisory Tuesday. The flaw, discovered by an outside researcher, could let a hostile website access information from another site opened in the same browsing session.

The update is the first of what Apple is calling a background security mechanism — brief fixes delivered between major operating‑system releases to address specific components such as the browser and core system libraries. Devices running the current releases — version 26.1 or later of iOS, iPadOS and macOS — are eligible to receive the changes automatically.

Apple said the issue was found in the browser engine that runs Safari and other apps. The company published a security note describing the vulnerability but gave few additional details about why this particular bug was chosen for the background patch. Apple did not provide a statement to reporters by publication time.

Users who installed the patch reported only a short restart was required, rather than the longer reboot process that usually accompanies full system updates. That lighter interruption is intended to make it easier for consumers to accept fixes without a lengthy interruption to device use.

Security experts say the approach can narrow the window attackers have to exploit newly found flaws. “Smaller, more frequent fixes reduce risk for people who don’t update right away,” said Dr. Lina Morales, a mobile security analyst at North Point Labs. She added that transparency about the fixes’ scope will be important for trust.

Apple previously trialed similar fixes with beta testers earlier this year. Consumers are advised to install the patch when prompted and keep their devices updated to reduce exposure to web‑based attacks.
