CapV Tells Founders: Start Public-Offering Messaging Long Before You File

CapV is expanding a new communications unit and expects to bring on roughly two dozen specialists by the end of the third quarter to help companies get narrative and leadership positioning ready for public markets.

The private-equity firm is staffing up its team with people who’ve worked on investor messaging, market communications and executive branding. Among the hires are professionals who previously served at Nasdaq, ICR, Brunswick Group and Burson, as well as an adviser who worked on fund messaging for SoftBank Investment Advisers. CapV’s leadership says the mix reflects the variety of communications work startups face during major transactions.

The firm’s approach reframes messaging as part of transaction preparedness rather than a last-minute box to check. For founders, that means shaping how executives speak about strategy, anticipating tougher scrutiny, and managing the conversations already happening about the company long before a registration statement is filed. CapV argues that communications should evolve alongside product, finance and governance work — not be tacked on in the final sprint.

Industry consultants welcome the move. Laura Chen, a corporate communications strategist who has guided several firms through listings, notes that early narrative development can cut risks: “When leadership practices public-facing explanations well in advance, it reduces surprises and helps preserve valuation,” she said. Founders who ignore messaging until the filing stage often find decisions compressed into high-pressure windows, Chen added.

For founders weighing the trade-offs, CapV’s bet signals a shift: communications is being treated as operational readiness. That can mean additional expense up front, but the firm contends it smooths the path to a more disciplined, defendable public debut.
