Facebook is bringing back a classic feature from its early days—the poke. This simple tool, which allows users to give friends a virtual nudge, is seeing a resurgence among younger users, prompting Facebook to reintegrate it more prominently into the platform.
Now, users can poke friends directly through a dedicated button on their profiles. The page allows users to see who has poked them, find friends to poke, and keep a tally of their interactions, turning a simple gesture into a potential game.
The reimagined poke feature is tailored to appeal to a younger audience accustomed to gamified social media interactions, similar to Snapchat and TikTok. These platforms have faced regulatory challenges due to concerns about their addictive nature. By enhancing poke interactions, Meta aims to foster similar user engagement on Facebook.
As users increase their poke counts, they can unlock various icons, such as fire emojis or the number "100" next to friends' names. This move follows Facebook's earlier attempt in March 2024 to make pokes more accessible, which led to a significant increase in usage.
