Google Allows Pentagon Use Of Its AI On Classified Systems After Anthropic Standoff

Google has given the U.S. Defense Department permission to use its artificial intelligence tools on classified networks for any lawful purpose, according to multiple news accounts. The move comes after a public row between the Pentagon and Anthropic, the model developer that refused to agree to the kind of unrestricted access the military sought.

Anthropic declined the Defense Department’s request, citing concerns about its technology being turned toward domestic surveillance or weapons that act without human oversight. The Pentagon then labeled the company a supply-chain risk, a designation usually applied to foreign adversaries, and Anthropic sued. A judge recently blocked that label while the case proceeds.

Other AI firms moved quickly after Anthropic’s refusal. OpenAI and xAI both reached separate arrangements with the Defense Department. Google’s contract reportedly contains language stating it does not intend its systems to be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, language similar to the clauses in OpenAI’s agreement. But some legal analysts say those assurances may be hard to enforce once classified operations begin.

Roughly nine hundred fifty Google employees have petitioned the company to follow Anthropic’s lead and withhold technology from the Defense Department absent stronger limits. Many of those staffers worry the concessions could erode public trust and create internal strife. Google did not reply to a request for comment about the deal.

An independent defense analyst said the dispute highlights tensions between national security priorities and corporate ethics, noting contract language alone won’t settle the bigger questions about oversight and accountability. They suggested Congress or the courts may ultimately set clearer rules about how commercial AI can operate inside government classified environments.

For now, the litigation between Anthropic and the Pentagon will continue, and other tech companies that chose to cooperate with the military will be watched closely by employees, lawmakers and civil liberties groups.
