Intel said Tuesday it has signed on to work with SpaceX and Tesla on a planned semiconductor fabrication plant in Texas, but the company provided little clarity about what it will contribute to the project. In a brief post on X, Intel said its end-to-end capabilities in chip design, production and assembly could help Terafab pursue its goal of delivering one terawatt of compute capacity each year for future AI and robotic systems.

Elon Musk first announced the joint venture in March, outlining plans for chips that would serve artificial intelligence workloads, satellite operations and a proposed orbital data center — as well as advancing autonomy for Tesla vehicles and robotics efforts. At the time, observers questioned how two companies without a history in mass semiconductor manufacturing could undertake such a complex build.

Chip plants are among the costliest industrial undertakings, typically taking several years to construct and commonly requiring more than $20 billion to outfit a sterile production environment and the precision equipment needed to etch circuits into silicon. That reality has prompted many designers to adopt an asset-light model that outsources fabrication, while Intel has been trying to rebuild its own onshore manufacturing business and secure big, steady customers for its foundry services.

Industry analysts say Intel’s participation supplies the missing manufacturing expertise and scale that Terafab would need, but it also signals the project may lean on established fabrication techniques rather than radical new methods. One analyst noted that Intel gains a pair of high-profile clients while SpaceX and Tesla would get a seasoned producer to handle the most capital-intensive aspects of making chips.

Shares of Intel climbed by a little more than 3/100 on the announcement, changing hands at $52.28, roughly 29/1000 above the opening bell around 2 p.m. ET. Beyond its short post, Intel offered no further detail about timelines, investment size or the specific technologies it would deploy. Public relations representatives for SpaceX and Tesla did not provide comment to requests seeking clarification.

For now, the item raises as many questions as it answers: building the plant would be a long-term undertaking, and whether Terafab will reshape domestic chip supply or chiefly reflect traditional foundry partnerships depends on technical road maps and funding that have yet to be disclosed.
