Kind Founder Urges Entrepreneurs To Set Firm Boundaries To Avoid Burnout

Daniel Lubetzky, the entrepreneur who grew Kind into a company sold for $5 billion in 2020, is warning founders that unchecked drive can wreck health and productivity. After years of surviving on four or five hours of sleep a night while pushing the business forward, Lubetzky says he learned the hard way that relentless work habits exact a visible and physical toll. He now urges business leaders to reclaim control over when they engage with messages and screens so their days stop answering to every ping.

Lubetzky, known to TV audiences from his stint as an investor on Shark Tank, told Business Insider his old routine left him worn down and short on sunlight and exercise. Those nights of limited rest amounted to roughly one-half to two-thirds of the typical eight-hour recommendation, he said, and showed up in his appearance and energy. He described the episode as a turning point, a reminder that sustained performance requires pacing rather than nonstop sprinting toward milestones.

Among the practical changes he recommends: carve out set times to check email and social apps, block off windows for outdoor activity, and treat sleep as a business priority. A sleep researcher reached for comment said limiting after-hours device use and aiming for consistent sleep schedules can restore decision-making and creativity — two assets founders need most. “You can keep being ambitious,” the expert added, “but you won’t do it well if you’re running on empty.”

Lubetzky’s story illustrates a broader pattern in startups: short-term hustle often trumps long-term resilience. Investors and employees alike suffer when leaders model 24/7 availability. By contrast, deliberate boundaries tend to improve focus and reduce costly mistakes.

For founders trying to balance growth with well-being, his advice is simple: designate tech-free stretches, prioritize movement and daylight, and target seven to eight hours of sleep when possible. Those modest rules, he argues, let entrepreneurs sustain ambition without sacrificing their health.
