Match Group Pours $100 Million Into Sniffies, A Location-Based Hookup App For Gay Men

Match Group said Tuesday it has invested one hundred million dollars in Sniffies, a Seattle startup that connects men seeking casual encounters through a location-centered mobile service. The move adds another specialty product to Match’s stable, which includes Tinder, Match, OkCupid and Hinge, and signals a bet on niche platforms as mainstream services face slowing momentum.
Sniffies advertises a live map that shows nearby users and common meeting spots, letting people see and message others based on proximity. Match estimates the app draws roughly three million unique users each month. Company officials said Sniffies will keep running on its own, while Match provides capital and strategic support to accelerate growth.
“When we first talked with the Sniffies team, it was clear their product fit a community need and they know how their members interact,” Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff told reporters in a statement, adding that the money is meant to help scale the service without changing its culture. Sniffies’ design and imagery reflect a blunt, adult-oriented approach that appeals to users looking for straightforward encounters rather than long-term dating.
The investment comes as Match Group grapples with broader shifts in how people meet. Consumers cite app fatigue and an appetite for more organic, in-person introductions, and Match has reported slowing additions of new users at key properties such as Tinder even after topping recent quarterly financial projections. Analysts say betting on smaller, focused apps can be a way to recapture audiences that larger platforms no longer serve.
Industry observers and privacy experts say the deal raises questions about moderation and data safety on apps built around location. “Specialized services meet specific demand, but they also create unique risks,” said a university researcher who studies digital intimacy, noting that growth will hinge on how Sniffies balances user safety with the straightforward experience its members value.
