A compact, glass-walled prototype dubbed “McDonald’s Next” was revealed to franchise owners in Las Vegas, showcasing a shift toward pickup-driven layouts and visible food prep.

McDonald’s quietly assembled the mock restaurant inside a warehouse and gave franchisees a walkthrough at its Worldwide meeting. Visitors were shown a storefront with floor-to-ceiling glass that lets patrons see straight into the cooking area, including the fry line, and an espresso bar where customers can sit at a small counter and watch beverages being made. Company materials say the prototype removes the traditional service counter in favor of a single ordering portal and climate-controlled lockers where diners retrieve their orders.

The design separates delivery and dine-in flow: courier pickup lockers sit outside, and the kitchen is arranged in two distinct zones, with roughly two-fifths of the space devoted to drinks and desserts. Equipment is fitted with sensors that notify managers when components need attention, such as when cooking oil must be replaced, part of a broader push to automate maintenance and reduce downtime.

Industry consultants say the concept responds to the rising share of off-premise orders and consumer interest in transparency about how food is prepared. A restaurant design expert who reviewed images of the build suggested the layout could shorten wait times and reassure customers about hygiene, though it may require new operational training.

Franchise owners who toured the prototype shared impressions on social platforms, calling it intriguing but raising questions about retrofit costs and franchisee support. McDonald’s plans to offer the model to locations scheduled for remodels or new construction, though the company hasn’t released a firm national timeline.
