Meta's latest venture, 'Vibes,' aims to innovate social media with AI-generated short videos, reminiscent of TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, the concept is meeting with mixed reactions. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, showcased this new feature on Instagram, displaying a series of AI-crafted clips, including animated creatures and historical figures.
The platform allows users to both view and create AI-driven videos. As people engage with the feed, Meta's algorithm will learn their preferences to tailor content. Users can start from scratch or modify existing videos by adding music and visuals before sharing them across various Meta platforms.
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, noted that the company has initially collaborated with AI firms like Midjourney and Black Forest Labs to power the first iteration of Vibes. Meanwhile, Meta is working on developing its own AI technologies to enhance the platform further.
Despite its ambitious rollout, Vibes has not been warmly received. Comments on Zuckerberg’s announcement reflect skepticism, with users expressing disdain for what they perceive as unnecessary AI content. This sentiment is compounded by broader social media trends where AI-generated material has oversaturated platforms, prompting companies like YouTube to take action against repetitive content.
Meta's decision seems counterintuitive following its recent pledge to combat unoriginal content on its platforms. The push for AI-generated videos contrasts with the company's earlier initiatives to promote genuine storytelling. Whether Vibes will gain traction or merely add to digital clutter remains to be seen.
