In a move to expand its social networking capabilities, Meta's Threads app is rolling out a new feature called Communities. This development, announced on Thursday, aims to provide users with dedicated spaces for engaging in discussions about their favorite topics, such as sports, entertainment, and pop culture. With over 400 million monthly active users, Threads is positioning itself as a significant alternative to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Communities on Threads offer users a chance to join groups centered around specific interests, with distinctive emojis available to express engagement within these groups. Unlike X, where users create and moderate their communities, Threads communities are set up by Meta, allowing non-members to participate in discussions. This approach could potentially foster more inclusive and varied conversations.

Posts within Threads communities are visible across the platform, including in the For You and Following feeds, but only members enjoy certain perks like custom emojis. For instance, a basketball emoji is available in the NBA community, while book enthusiasts can use a stack of books emoji. The introduction of profile badges for active community builders is also on the horizon, further incentivizing participation.

Threads' community feature builds upon the app's existing Topic Tags, which evolved from user-generated hashtags. This evolution aligns with how users naturally organized themselves on the platform, creating informal groups that have now become formalized. This strategy mirrors the early days of Twitter, where user behavior influenced the adoption of features like hashtags and retweets.

Meta is initially testing communities around the most popular interests observed on Threads, with plans to expand. The company had previously invited a select group of testers to explore the feature, with Instagram head Adam Mosseri hinting at its release over the weekend.

As Threads continues to gain ground on X in terms of daily active users, the introduction of Communities could enhance user interaction and retention. Meta's decision to integrate user behavior into its feature development may well prove advantageous as it seeks to solidify Threads as a go-to platform for social engagement.
