A lightweight Android version of Microsoft's email client, Outlook Lite, will stop working on May 26, the company told TechCrunch Monday, marking the end of a product first released in 2022.

Microsoft created the pared-down app for phones with limited storage and for customers in areas with slower network service. It offered a stripped-back interface and lower data requirements compared with the regular Outlook application, aiming to keep basic mail and calendar functions available on low-end hardware.

The company had previously said it would remove the app from the Google Play marketplace in October 2025, but now it has locked in an earlier date when core features will stop functioning. The move was first flagged in reporting by Neowin and confirmed by Microsoft’s online support documentation.

Microsoft is advising existing Outlook Lite users to move to the full Outlook mobile app to retain access to messages, calendar entries and attachments. People who switch will be able to sign into the standard app and continue using their accounts; the company’s support pages direct users to the Play Store to download the full client.

Industry observers say the decision mirrors a broader trend of consolidating maintenance around a single app to cut costs and speed feature development. One mobile-software analyst said companies often retire slimmed-down alternatives once the mainstream app becomes more efficient, but cautioned that users in regions with weak connectivity may face friction and should back up important data or consider webmail or third-party clients as interim options.
