Pizza Hut Will Drop “Pizza” From Its Signage for 25 Weeks Ahead of NFL Season

A national pizza chain is temporarily shortening its name to “Hut” for roughly half a year as part of a football-season promotion, a move consumers first noticed on storefronts and social platforms.

Shoppers in Plano, Texas, spotted the change this week when a location near the company’s headquarters hid the word “Pizza” behind a football-shaped banner, and the brand updated its social-media icons to match. The limited renaming will run for 25 weeks and is timed to coincide with the 2026 pro football campaign, the company confirmed to reporters. The new look is strictly promotional, and restaurants will continue serving the same menu.

The timing comes as Yum! Brands prepares to divest the chain. A private-equity firm, LongRange Capital, agreed to buy operations outside mainland China for about $1.5 billion, while Yum China is buying the mainland business for roughly $1.2 billion — a combined transaction valued at $2.7 billion and expected to wrap up this month. The U.S. arm has struggled: it accounted for about three of every 25 dollars in Yum!’s 2025 revenue and has seen domestic sales slide for 10 consecutive quarters.

Industry observers say the stunt is classic guerrilla marketing at low cost. “It’s a way to get eyeballs without changing the kitchens,” said Julia Ramos, a Chicago-based brand strategist. She added that the tweak can spark short-term traffic and remind customers the chain offers more than one product, but it won’t fix deeper operational problems.

For now, customers shouldn’t expect lasting change. The company says the shortened name will revert when the football season promotion ends, and staff and franchisees will keep business as usual.
