Reddit Begins Serving Ads In Search As User Growth Slows

Reddit has started a small experiment placing advertisements inside its search pages as the company looks to squeeze more revenue from the people who already use the site. The test, limited to a handful of advertisers, will match promoted content to what people type into Reddit’s search box, the company said, and will be monitored to see how users and brands react. A Reddit spokesperson added the trial is meant to help the company fine-tune the balance between useful sponsored listings and the organic results people expect.

The move follows quarterly results that showed the social network is losing some forward momentum. Reddit reported 130.3 million global daily active users in the third quarter, with U.S. daily users falling from 53.2 million to 50.7 million compared with the prior quarter. On an annual basis the U.S. total dropped by about one in 50 users. Management warned that, if current trends persist, daily use could slip to somewhere between one in 10 and one in 5 by the end of the year. The company also issued guidance of $1 billion to $1.03 billion in sales for the fourth quarter, a range below Wall Street’s roughly $1.05 billion forecast, and the stock retreated after the announcement.

Executives have tied some of the traffic decline to changes in how internet search surfaces information. As major search engines answer more queries directly, fewer clicks make it back to community sites. That shift has raised the value of every signed-in user for ad targeting, which is one reason Reddit plans a gradual transition to a logged-in browsing model outside the U.S. first. The company argues the change will curb automated scraping and deliver richer signals for advertisers, potentially increasing the price advertisers pay for placements.

Industry consultants say the test is a logical — if incremental — step to raise revenue per user. “Placing ads inside search taps users at the moment they’re expressing intent,” said media analyst Claire Morales. “But it only works if the ads are relevant and not intrusive. Otherwise engagement could fall further.” Advertisers tend to pay a premium for inventory that can be tied to clear purchase intent, Morales added, but she warned Reddit must avoid cluttering search results in ways that drive people away.

For regular Redditors the changes could mean more tailored product suggestions when they hunt for tips or gear, and fewer anonymous browsing options. Some users may welcome recommendations that match their searches; others worry the platform will feel more commercial and less like a discussion forum. Moderators and privacy advocates have also flagged concerns about handing more behavioral signals to advertisers as browsing becomes less anonymous.

Longer term, Reddit’s effort to monetize search sits alongside other plays — subscriptions, premium features and direct partnerships — aimed at offsetting slowing user growth. The company said it will evaluate the experiment’s results before expanding, but analysts say the test will be watched closely as Reddit tries to adapt to a web where AI-driven search and changing user habits are reshaping where attention — and ad dollars — flow.
