Burger King said its U.S. same-store sales climbed by roughly one-twelfth for the quarter ended June 30, and company leaders point to changes in the Whopper as the main engine of that gain.
The chain overhauled the burger’s recipe this year and even redesigned its packaging, moves executives say have prompted lapsed customers to return. Tom Curtis, president of Burger King’s operations in the U.S. and Canada, told reporters that diners are rechecking the menu and that the brand is reclaiming business it lost in recent years.
Curtis also suggested some of the growth is coming at the expense of rivals, noting recent traffic softening at one major competitor. He said the company is shifting attention to service now, answering customer calls personally and rolling out a quality guarantee this summer that promises a remake or a free replacement if an order disappoints.
Industry analysts said the results reflect a simple formula: fix the core product and then reinforce the experience. “When the main item performs, it gives the rest of the operation room to prove itself,” said Marion Hayes, a restaurant consultant, who added that hospitality improvements could convert trial visits into repeat customers.
Still, Burger King faces work to sustain momentum. Executives say continued menu attention, staff training and consistent execution at individual restaurants will determine whether the recent sales uptick becomes a longer-term reversal.
