Waymo is gearing up to increase its footprint in the United States by adding Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Tampa to its list of target cities for robotaxi services. The company announced it will soon begin manual driving in these areas to prepare for the deployment of its autonomous vehicles.
These additions are part of Waymo's broader plan to roll out its driverless technology across the nation. Already, the company offers rides in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, with operations also live in Austin and Atlanta. By 2026, Waymo aims to include cities such as Dallas, Denver, and Miami, and is eyeing international markets starting with London and Tokyo.
Each new city presents unique challenges for Waymo. In Minneapolis, the harsh winter conditions could test the company’s technology, especially with snow affecting visibility and traction. Meanwhile, New Orleans' narrow, bustling streets, particularly in the French Quarter, will demand precise navigation and safety protocols.
Collaborations with local partners have been crucial for Waymo’s expansion. For instance, their vehicles are available through Uber’s app in Austin and Atlanta, while operations in Phoenix are managed by Moove, a mobility company. Although it's unclear if similar partnerships will be formed in these new cities, past strategies suggest it might be likely.
Waymo continues to lead in the race to expand autonomous vehicle services. Its competitors, like Zoox and Tesla, are also making strides but at a different pace. Zoox is operating in Las Vegas and San Francisco with a limited program, while Tesla has just received a permit to extend its services to Arizona along with existing locations in Austin and San Francisco.
As autonomous technology advances, Waymo’s aggressive expansion strategy positions it at the forefront of transforming urban mobility across the globe.
