WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that simplifies access to encrypted backups, allowing users to utilize passkeys for seamless restoration. This update means if you misplace your phone, you can recover your chat history using biometric methods like your fingerprint, facial recognition, or your previous device's screen lock code.

Historically, WhatsApp did not offer encryption for chat backups. However, in 2021, Meta implemented a security measure that enabled end-to-end encryption for these backups, letting users secure them with either a password or a 64-character encryption key. The challenge with this system was the need to remember or have immediate access to the password or key during the restoration process.

The introduction of passkeys eliminates the hassle of remembering complex passwords or locating long keys. Given WhatsApp's massive user base—boasting over three billion active users as of May—this feature aims to enhance user experience by making data recovery more intuitive. According to WhatsApp, this update will be gradually available to users worldwide over the next few weeks and months.

To take advantage of this new capability, users can navigate through the app by visiting Settings, selecting Chats, then Chat backup, and finally End-to-end encrypted backup to activate the encrypted backup feature and check for the passkey option. As the rollout progresses, users should regularly check their app settings to enable and utilize this new security feature.
