Subheadline: Reported bid would mark Bezos’s first move into team ownership as U.S. buyers continue to snap up English clubs

Jeff Bezos is said to be part of a consortium pursuing roughly a one-third stake in Liverpool Football Club, valuing the storied English side at about £1.35 billion (roughly $1.8 billion), The Guardian reported. If the transaction goes through, it would be the first time the Amazon founder owns a professional sports team, though he has been linked previously to potential purchases of U.S. franchises.

Liverpool remains one of European soccer’s most valuable properties — Forbes places its worth near $6 billion — and the club’s name carries deep recognition across Britain and beyond. The combination of a large, passionate fan base and rising global interest in English soccer has made ownership of Premiership clubs especially attractive to overseas investors. Popular media portrayals of club ownership have also heightened public curiosity about the business.

The surge in U.S. involvement in English football is well established. Investors from the United States currently hold stakes in 13 of the 20 clubs in the Premier League. Recent purchases by American billionaires include Todd Boehly and Mark Walter at Chelsea, Woody Johnson at Crystal Palace, Dan Friedkin at Everton and a Bill Foley-led group, which included actor Michael B. Jordan, at Bournemouth. Celebrity investors such as Ryan Reynolds, Tom Brady, Will Ferrell, Russell Westbrook and Michael Phelps have also taken minority positions at various English clubs.

Analysts say there are several reasons behind the rush: many top U.S. sports leagues are effectively closed to newcomers or carry prohibitive price tags, while stakes in English clubs offer entry to a global sports market and opportunities for commercial growth. One sports finance specialist noted that buying a Premiership share can be a fast route to access international marketing, media rights and star players, adding that the asset can serve both as a status item and a platform for broader business ties.

For Bezos, who has in recent years become more visible in cultural circles since his marriage to Lauren Sánchez, the move would deepen his commercial ties to the U.K. Amazon has previously streamed European soccer competitions, and reports say his AI venture, Prometheus, is exploring office space in London’s King’s Cross technology district. With a net worth reported at about $280 billion, purchasing a major sports asset would be feasible and would expand his footprint beyond technology and media.

Any deal remains subject to negotiation and regulatory review, and Liverpool’s ownership structure would change only if terms are agreed and approved. New investors often promise cash for transfers and infrastructure, but supporters and local officials frequently raise questions about long-term stewardship and the influence of outside money on club traditions.
