OpenAI Acquires Glass Imaging For About $300 Million

OpenAI has purchased Glass Imaging, a small company that develops advanced camera software for phones, in a transaction reported to be just over $300 million, according to people familiar with the matter. The deal was first disclosed by a financial news outlet, and representatives for OpenAI did not immediately reply to requests for confirmation.

Glass Imaging, started in 2019 and headquartered in Los Altos, Calif., had previously raised roughly $30 million from private backers. The startup was built by two former Apple engineers who helped create the company’s depth-effect portrait feature, and it has pitched itself as solving hardware limits in phone photography by training machine‑learning models to understand how specific camera modules behave.

Instead of applying edits after a picture is taken, Glass’s approach aims to produce improved images at capture time by modeling lens, sensor and software characteristics for each handset. Industry observers say that kind of on-device intelligence can shrink the gap between bulky camera optics and the thin profiles consumers expect from modern phones.

The acquisition fits a broader pattern of OpenAI moving toward physical products. The company has been linked to prototypes for phones, earbuds and other consumer gadgets, and last year it bought a design firm led by a notable former Apple designer for $6.5 billion. “Bringing in teams that know both camera hardware and machine‑learning makes sense if you want better imaging without bigger lenses,” said Maria Chen, a mobile technology analyst at Harbor Insights.

For users, the most visible change could be clearer photos from thin phones without relying on heavy post-processing. But experts caution integration work takes time, and how quickly OpenAI folds the technology into any future device remains an open question.
