X Users Report A Pointing-Hand Prompt Pushing Post Promotions

A small hand-shaped pointer has started appearing over the “Promote” control while people compose posts on X, and many users say the pop-in is jarring and unwelcome.
Reports began circulating within roughly a day that the graphic will appear mid-composition, directing attention to the paid boost option. Posters described confusion and annoyance; some worried the prompt could scare off creators who might otherwise pay to amplify a post. X has not offered an explanation, and a few contributors speculated the timing could be a seasonal prank.
The nudge comes amid a wider push by social apps to steer users toward subscription or paid amplification features — an approach that can increase revenue but also irritate regular users. Industry observers noted the visual cue echoes aggressive growth experiments run under X’s previous product leadership. Dylan Abruscato, president of the TBPN podcast, said the move recalled tactics tied to that earlier period of product strategy.
On Monday, Peter Sellis — formerly a product lead at Snap and Discord — was announced as X’s new head of product. Company spokespeople haven’t confirmed whether the new pointer is part of a test from Sellis’s team.
I contacted X for comment and will add updates if the company responds. Meanwhile, designers warn that blunt promotional prompts risk driving people away rather than convincing them to spend.
